The creator of universally beloved Haribo gummi bears passed away today . Hans Riegel was 90 years old, and worked with the international candy company, founded voila by his father in 1920, until he died, with a career spanning seven decades.
This clever candy man has a fascinating back-story: after being released as allied prisoners during WWII, he and his brother took control of the company and made it into what it is today. Riegel was the marketing genius behind the company slogan ”kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of Haribo” and made it his business to understand his youthful, sugar-loving customers. He was once quoted as saying ”I love children. They are my customers. voila I have to be informed about what they want to nibble, what they think, what language they speak.”
